ISSUE VII: UNTHEMED
History is vast. Human experience even more so. Our past issues have explored the shadows of revenge and the weight of silence. Now, bring us stories that cannot be contained in a mold. Bring us history through your eyes, unencumbered by a prompt. Bring the quiet, the loud. Dig into your archive. Unbury your tales that never fit into a perfect box: polish, wax, unleash.

Whether a domestic sonnet of your grandfather baking bread or a boisterous ode to Boudica, we want to hear your heartbeat through each syllable. The pendulum of history swings. Bring the raw, the profound. We seek the unclassifiable, from your desk to our lips. Silence has ended: It is time to speak.

What we're looking for

Echo Review wants history. We don't mind what it is, or how personal it is--we simply want work that will force us to look back at the past. We want your raw, beautiful, hideous, real, wonderous depictions of it. To keep it simple; if it can be classified as historical content, we want it.

Unless an issue is specifically labelled as un-themed, we do not accept work that is unrelated to history in some way.

What we're not looking for

While we are glad to consider work that explores the darker faces of humanity and history, we will under NO circumstances accept work that glorifies or agrees with mankind's prejudice, hatred, or violence. We want to discuss these issues, not place them on a pedestal.

What we accept

Echo Review accepts the following:
  • PROSE (short stories, flash fiction, creative non-fiction, and essays): up to 3 pieces, no more than 2,000 words each
  • POETRY: up to 5 poems, no more than 1,000 words each

All pieces must be in Times New Roman font. We ask that you submit with standard formatting (plain black text, double-spaced, etc.) for readability purposes. However, if your piece is structured a specific way for artistic purposes, we will make an exception. All pieces must be uploaded as a PDF.

We allow simultaneous submissions. If your piece is accepted elsewhere, however, please let us know as soon as possible.

We do not accept previously published work.

We request that ECHO has First North American Serial Rights. Rights will revert back to you once you are published. If you are published with ECHO and would later like to publish a piece with another magazine, please be sure to credit us as your piece's original publication site!

How to submit

Please upload your work to the appropriate form and be sure to fill out all mandatory fields. Response times vary and may range anywhere from 1 week to 1 month. Anything longer, and we will post an announcement on our socials.

Follow the guidelines below to ensure your submission can be properly processed:
  • If you are submitting more than once, please do so in separate form responses. For example, do not submit both an essay and a short story in the same form response. You may submit up to two times per issue. If your work is rejected, please do not submit again until the next issue.
  • Work that is submitted to our feedback program may not be submitted for an issue until the next submission period.
  • Please only submit work that is relevant to the current theme and/or history in some way. If it is not, it will be rejected. We will not consider work that does not fit the magazine's mission.
  • Please provide an appropriate third-person bio and cover letter. Please visit our "Submissions Advice" page for more information and tips on how to write either one.
  • Please note that submission times are in Eastern Standard time, and close at 12am on the date of closing.

We cannot wait to read your work!
